EMC CIO seeking the cure for the legacy blues | #emcworld
by Heather Johnson | May 5, 2015

EMC Corp. CIO Vic Bhagat sat down with theCUBE to discuss how EMC’s transformation to a more digitized workspace is helping him recover. For EMC, the digitization of business means harnessing data in a more efficient manner.

“Everything is being consumed in a digital way,” he says. “There is an enormous amount of data. The question we face is how do you harness all of this data to really enable your company to grow?”
The CIO says that EMC plans to launch platform as a service. With Pivotal Cloud Foundry, the company will have a suite of services that it can provide to developers.

Investing in forward-thinking technology

Despite big strides forward from EMC, Bhagat says that he, like many CIOs that oversee established companies, suffer what he calls the “legacy blues.” “Legacy is the anchor that’s going to hold you back,” he says. “The majority of our spend is on supporting the systems. How do we digitize that capability so we can invest in forward-looking technology?”

Bhagat can’t completely get rid of the legacy blues, as certain departments still rely on old applications. However, he also has a new generation of employees to consider. “The technology is the easy part,” he says. “I’ve also redefined all 2,000 IT jobs in my department. I have a more contemporary organization.”

An exciting time for CIOs

As the man behind this more contemporary, flexible department, Bhagat believes that the convergence of cloud, big data, social, mobile and digital security makes 2015 an exciting time for a CIO.

But he has to keep the big picture in mind. “Is it the chief information officer, innovation officer, infrastructure officer, integration officer — yes! It’s all of it,” he says. “We have to rethink how we partner with the business. We have a seat at the table, but it’s our seat to lose if we don’t deliver.”
