Virtual Reality is getting close to public consumer release and the competition is intense. New technology and new innovations are being introduced by multiple tech companies. This area is still growing, in fact not a lot of high end VR specific games and media have been officially announced. But consumers are dying to get their hands on this tech.

We’re going to compare a few of the most popular VR devices. As you are watching, hit the subscribe button because we are previewing new upcoming tech all the time.

Microsoft Hololens
The Hololens has the most potential out of all the VR devices. It’s not only going to be used for gaming, but for potentially everything. Hololens works like a VR device, but it actually projects the media into your environment. It’s as if the objects or characters are actually in your room. Everything about it is seamless. There are no cables and it’s self contained. The oculus and other devices often require an hdmi cable and a usb cable connected to the device. It has it’s own advanced sensors, a high definition 3D optical head mounted display with holographic lenses, and spatial sound. The interface is controlled through gaze, voice, and hand gestures. This project has actually been in development for five years until it was just recently announced.

The gaming example showed Minecraft being displayed in a person’s living room. You’ll be able to manipulate and view your world in your own living space.

And believe it or not it will be released soon within the same time frame as Windows 10.

Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is the original VR device that started this new trend. Since the kickstarter originated they brought on John Carmack as the Chief Technical Officer and the company was acquired by Facebook. With these big names involved, you can be sure that the Oculus will launch with a great presence.

The Rift uses custom tracking technology to provide ultra-low latency 360° head tracking, allowing you to seamlessly look around the virtual world just as you would in real life. Every subtle movement of your head is tracked in real time creating a natural and intuitive experience.

The Oculus Rift creates a stereoscopic 3D view with excellent depth, scale, and parallax. Unlike 3D on a television or in a movie, this is achieved by presenting unique and parallel images for each eye. This is the same way your eyes perceive images in the real world, creating a much more natural and comfortable experience.

The Oculus Rift delivers a high-end virtual reality experience at an affordable price. The Rift is also designed to be as comfortable and lightweight as possible for long play sessions.

The Oculus Rift provides an approximately 100° field of view, stretching the virtual world beyond your peripheral vision. Your view of the game is no longer boxed in on a screen and is only limited by what your eyes can see. The combination of the wide field of view with head-tracking and stereoscopic 3D creates an immersive virtual reality experience.

Project Morpheus
Project Morpheus is the codename for an upcoming virtual reality headset produced by Sony. It is designed to be fully functional with the Sony PlayStation 4 and work with the PlayStation Vita. It is currently a prototype and has no confirmed release date.

Not much info has been revealed about Morpheus but we are assuming it’s on par with the Oculus and will provide seamless entertainment with Sony consoles.

It features a high FOV, 6DOF head-tracking, stereoscopic 3D, and unwarped output to a TV for others to view what the user sees.
