The New Era of Smart: The Intersection of Innovation and the Way we Live
Dr. Katharine Frase, Chief Technology Officer, IBM Public Sector

The first in a series of Smarter Cities Master Class lectures, IBM Chief Technology Officer, IBM Public Sector, Dr. Katharine Frase describes how Smarter Cities will focus increasingly on human factors. Smarter systems — in cities, transportation, government and industry –can analyze the vast amounts of data being generated around us to help make more informed decisions, operate more efficiently or even predict the future.

These systems enable city planners around the world to design urban environments that promote safety, community vitality and economic growth. They can bring real-time information together from city transportation, social media, emergency services and leisure facilities. They can enable transport systems to better manage traffic flow and reduce congestion and they can stimulate economic growth. But while there have been great strides in areas such as Open Data and the increased sharing of information, smarter systems will only succeed in improving cities if there is wide citizen engagement.
