Mass Effect: Andromeda Pushed Back to 2017, Lead Writer Quits

March 5, 2016

Not soon after I made my Mass Effect: Andromeda Interesting Facts video did the news hit that MA:E has been delayed and pushed back to early 2017. I’m not too surprised, given the announcement a few weeks back of lead writer Chris Schlerf leaving Bioware for Destiny’s Bungie. Let’s hope those extra months make the game even greater!

ABOUT THE GAME

Mass Effect: Andromeda is an upcoming action role-playing third-person shooter video game developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is a sequel to Mass Effect 3 and was officially announced on June 15, 2015 during the Electronic Arts press conference at E3.

Players are able to play as either a male or female human character. They will be able to pilot the new Mako, a six-wheeled buggy-type vehicle seen in the reveal trailer and driven in the first Mass Effect game. The game takes place long after the events of the first three Mass Effect games, in the Andromeda Galaxy.

TEXT FORMAT

So not soon after publishing my Mass Effect: Andromeda Interesting Facts video, I find out that the game’s been pushed back to the first quarter of 2017, instead of being released at the end of this year.

During the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference which was held recently, Electronic Arts Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen stated –

“We have all our sports games. We have our Mirror’s Edge runner game, it’s first quarter. And then we have Mass Effect, which is a sci-fi action game, in our fourth quarter. So big year ahead and we’re pretty excited.”

While normally a fourth quarter release would mean the end of the year, in EA’s case (Bioware’s parent organization) this means the company’s financial fourth quarter, which runs from January to March.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me – there has been little update on Andromeda besides fan theories and speculation, and if those extra months mean making a much better game then so be it. However the game was first announced way back in 2012, and understandably fans are getting a little bit fed up with the wait.

It probably hasn’t helped Bioware’s situation now that lead writer Chris Schlerf has left in favour of Destiny developers, Bungie. He posted a tweet on his Twitter account saying –

“To confirm what some folks asked about a few months back, I am no longer working on ME:A at BioWare Montreal.”

While he has jumped ship to another game company, he harbours no ill will towards Bioware, stating in another Tweet –

“Sincerely one of the best experiences of my career – I’m incredibly grateful to have worked with such talented and truly wonderful human beings.”
