Maserati has just announced the MY16 upgrades for its smallest sedan, the Ghibli.

The Ghibli has been a great success for the brand, however Chief Operating Officer of Maserati Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Glen Sealey, assures that the marque has not become complacent as a result.

“Despite the transformation the Ghibli has brought to Maserati in terms of sales, the Trident marque is not resting on its laurels,” he said.

“These changes for 2016 bring to the Ghibli new [reduced] levels of emissions and fuel consumption allied to a range of comfort, safety [and] exclusivity features that will enable it to build on its sales in the New Year.”

The 2016 Ghibli will continue with three engine choices, with both petrol versions, the Ghibli and Ghibli S, featuring a new-generation Euro 6-compliant twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 243kw/500Nm and 301kw/550Nm respectively.

The new powerplants run cleaner and leaner by up to 12 per cent, without sacrificing teh performance available from the old Euro 5 engines. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.9L/100km for the Ghibli and 9.6L/100km for the Ghibli S.

The 8-speed ZF automatic transmission has been retained, albeit newly fitted with fuel saving stop/start technology.

The Ghibli S is capable of hitting 100km/h from standstill in 5.0 seconds on its way to a 285km/h top speed. Less potent but still quick, the entry-level Ghibli manages the zero-100km/h dash in 5.6 seconds with a slightly lower top speed of 263km/h.

The Ghibli diesel is also upgraded to Euro 6, reducing claimed fuel consumption to an impressive 5.9L/100km. However, with 202kw/600Nm on tap, the Ghibli Diesel is still more than capable, making the sprint from zero to 100km/h in just 6.3 seconds.

Accompanying the updated range of engines is a suite of new safety features including Blind Spot Monitoring, Cross Path Warning and Auto Dipping Door Mirrors.

New convenience features such as Siri Personal Assistant and a powered boot lid that can be operated remotely or with a wave of your foot have also been added to the MTC infotainment system.

Other additions include the new optional Harman Kardon premium sound system, which boasts 10 speakers and a 900-Watt 12 channel amplifier.

Pricing for the 2016 Maserati Ghibli starts at $139,900 plus on-roads for the Diesel, increases to $143,900 for the Ghibli and tops out at $169, 900 for the Ghibli S.
