A veteran St. Louis police officer survived what the city’s police chief called an ambush and assassination attempt that occurred shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday along Maryland Avenue in the city’s Central West End neighborhood.

The officer working a second job and in his own car, reports the St Louis Dispatch. He was parked along the side of the road when he saw two men walk past his car. They were reportedly joined by another shortly afterward.

Authorities says he did not pursue them but after a few moments the same individuals returned in a car and pulled up directly in front of the officer’s vehicle.

A man wearing a bandanna over his face then exited the passenger side door and fired at least a dozen rounds at the officer who was wounded in the upper torso. The suspect’s vehicle sped away while the gunman fled on foot. The officer managed to return fire and believes he hit the shooter, according to police.

The wounded officer then pursued the gunman in his vehicle but was forced to give up the chase after he lost track of him near a parking garage. The officer was taken to a local hospital, treated and released the same day.

The city’s police chief, Sam Dotson, told the media this was a targeted assassination attempt on a police officer. The chief also credited the officers ballistics vest with saving his life.

Investigators will begin viewing surveillance footage and hope to identify the suspects involved as soon as possible.
