OneWire (http://www.onewire.com/videos) interviews Jeffrey Solomon, CEO of Cowen and Company, in the latest installment to the Open Door video series with Skiddy von Stade.

“I’m a big believer that you have to have a big dream. If you have big dreams, they take you to places you might not otherwise go.”

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Economics, Jeffrey Solomon initially chose a different path — he was moving to New York City to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. After a little more thought, he decided to first get a couple of years of experience in something “tangible” as a backup plan, and began his career in finance at age 22. After the two years he planned to work in the industry came and went, Jeffrey decided he was hooked. He stayed in finance and took a job in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Shearson Lehman Brothers. In 1991, he became the Chief Administrative Officer at Republic New York Securities Corporation, the brokerage affiliate of Republic National Bank, which is now part of the HSBC group. Three years later, he joined Ramius, now Cowen Group’s investment management division, where he rose to head the department and later become Chief Operating Officer. Presently, he serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Cowen and Company. Jeffrey is also a Director of NuGo Nutrition, part of the Board of Directors of Carnegie Innovations, and is a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation.
