Colombia is undergoing a transitional phase that brings a unique opportunity to promote changes in governmental policies that can lead to the positioning of science and technology as the keystones of the country’s economic development. However, in Colombia the investment in activities related to science and technology has not increased significantly in the last decade, moreover, the overall scientific development of the last 3 years is situated below the one observed for peer countries in Latin America. To foster the scientific and technologic development it is required to define and implement strategies that seek to strengthen the research structure of the country and situate science and technology within the foundation of future governmental actions. The panel entitled “Models for the Advancement of Science and Technology” will provide a space for the interaction between academics and government representatives, where the participants will identify and discuss the challenges in the improvement of the country’s structure of scientific research, and the current needs for bolstering science education in Colombia. In addition, this panel intends to present different models of scientific development, which in turn will serve to inform the creation and/or modification of policies that address national needs for scientific advancement and the efficient use of its financial and intellectual resources. It is expected that the exchange of ideas between the panelists and attendees will help to create a roadmap for the establishment of consolidated strategies towards the strengthening of the colombian scientific community..
