Urbanisation is the major driver of the problems, so developing smart cities and communities in Europe is critical to achieving these goals. The European Commission has set up a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) of cities, enterprises and other stakeholders to work on innovative technologies and solutions to achieve the goals. This lecture provided first-hand insights into the strategic plan for the EIP and will survey the potential research fields related to smart cities and communities in the forthcoming Horizon 2020 framework program for EU research funding.

Lutz Heuser is Chief Technology Officer of the Urban Software Institute, a commercial innovation incubator for smart city solutions, focusing in particular on energy management, mobility and trustworthy business services using sensor-based infrastructure. Heuser is Chairman of the German Innovation Roundtable (IRT), a think tank of the German research-intense industry. In this role, he has worked with EU Commissioner Guenther Oettinger to establish the European Innovation Partnership (EIP). He has also founded, together with McKinsey, the Smart City Forum, which brings together around twenty cities with German industry to work on issues and barriers the EIP should address. Heuser is also an Adjunct Professor at QUT and an Honorary Professor of the Technical University of Darmstadt. His research is focused on the internet of things, ubiquitous computing in business processes, and smart city services.
